1859-1862. The earliest CDVs (1859-1862) had either no backmarks at all, or very simple one- or two-line photographer imprints in small type (usually name and address). 1863-1867. After about 1862 (1863-67) four or more lines with larger typeface and additional information became common. Curved lines of text with curlicues around them were popular about 1863-65. Frames or “cartouche” designs around the imprint and/or geometric patterns were common 1862-65. Some standard logos above the imprint (Liberty, eagle, artist’s palette) appeared 1862-66. 1865-1872. Cherub & camera logo appeared. 1867-1882. Photographer imprints became larger, sometimes were positioned lengthwise or diagonally (1868-1882). After 1872. Imprints became very large, elaborate designs covering most of the back of the card. Those with Egyptian or Oriental motif were popular Ca. 1881-86.
