| John E. Hall received a Basic
Business diploma from Strayer College in Washington, D.C. in 1951, and
completed his undergraduate education at Tulane University in New
Orleans, LA, and the University of Colorado. Struggling as a part-time
accountant to put himself through school, John was rewarded for his
efforts when he graduated from the University of Colorado School of
Medicine in 1965. He completed his residency at Ohio State University
Department of Preventive Medicine and stayed there through Graduate
School, receiving his Masters in Aerospace/ Occupational Medicine.
In 1966, John became the staff physician for the Student Health Service and the Cancer Clinic of the Ohio State University Hospital. He moved to Massachusetts in July of 1968, caring for the employees of General Dynamics, Quincy Shipbuilding Division as Chief of Medical Services. In 1970, he was hired as the Area Medical Director for GTE Sylvania, and became the Staff Physician for the Foxborough Area Medical Center in 1974. With his sagacious understanding of medicine, he rapidly rose up the ladder of success as physician specializing in Family Practice. In 1984, John moved to Hawai'i and worked at the Family & Urgent Care Center in Kailua for two years until he joined forces with the Department of Health as Chief of Health Services. His professional manner and established high principles set him apart, gaining him great respect and admiration. In 1989, he became Director of Health and City Physician where he successfully managed both arenas, developing and implementing policies while providing a first class emergency ambulance service to the people of O'ahu. |

From May 1991 until his retirement in October 1997, John held the position of Chief of Health Services responsible for the health, safety, and examination of approximately 10,000 City employees. He spearheaded the computerization of the division; the development of a local area network; the automation of health records and data flow; and the modernization of the laboratory/examination section. He assisted in the development and implementation of the City's first drug screening program for pre-employment, along with separate policies for the Honolulu Police and Fire Departments, and acted as medical review officer for city drug screening programs. He was also responsible for development and management of divisional budget. Dr. Hall was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia in April of 1999. He died on April 4, 2000 at his home in Kailua. Dr. Hall is survived by his companion of 14 years, Paul Beck of Kailua; his brothers James Hall of Colorado, Robert Hall of Maryland, William Hall of Nevada, and Richard Hall of Maryland; his sister Mary Lou Dabbs of Georgia; his sons Christopher J. Hall of Hawai'i and Gregory W. Hall of Massachusetts; his daughter Lisa Kore of Florida; his stepsons Brian Mangan of California, and Kerry Mangan of Massachusetts; his stepdaughter Jill Mangan of Hawai'i; his granddaughter Kathryn Hall of Massachusetts; and his grandsons Brian Perreault of Massachusetts, Jason Loranger of Hawai'i, and Sean Mangan and Jesse Mangan of Massachusetts.
